Working with an Expanding Selection Group and Data Bars

This article details how to get data bars working with an expanding selection group.

Method

This tip involves getting the first value to take into account the maximum and minimum values in the range.

Insert two additional columns next to the column you want to add data bars to. Then add Excels max() formula on the same row as the expanding group. Notice in the picture how the rages are absolute with “$” signs, and goes from row 10 to 11. Do the same thing with the min() formula in the cell to the right of the max().

References

Next, set up the conditional formatting to include the max() and min() values. The report should now render appropriately sized data bars.

You can hide the additional columns with the max and min.
